Pelosi: ‘I’m Predicting Six-to-Three in Favor’ for Health Care Ruling

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday she’s predicting a six-to-three Supreme Court ruling in favor of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.
“I have confidence that if we’re talking about the law of the land and our compliance with it that we will be OK,” Pelosi said during a private event at the Paley Center for Media in New York.
“Right now there are over 80 million people who are benefiting from the bill,” the California Democrat added. “We can’t roll that back, so we have to find a way to keep it.”

Pelosi said the bill was written in an “ironclad way” to remain in compliance with the Constitution, but said lawmakers would find a way to preserve its core policies in the event all or part of it is struck down.
“I think the bill will be upheld,” she maintained. “But we really do have to find a way to keep what is in the bill and what is coming.”
She continued, “They could go a couple ways…you could have one piece of it taken out and then you address it one way. That’s called severability, you sever one piece of it from the bill. Or they could say since this is in here we’re declaring the whole bill unconstitutional.”
“I’m predicting six-to-three in favor, so we we shall see,” Pelosi added. “It’s a lesson in civics and I respect it, I respect the court and judicial review.”
Obama prompted outrage earlier this week when he said he believed the law would be upheld, and that a move to overturn it would be “judicial activism.” The Justice Department has since been ordered to clarify the remarks.
