It’s easy to forget that the people we see on television every day are human beings. But, yes, they actually are. In fact, at one point, they were all human beings who went to high school — complete with big hair-dos, acne-riddled faces, and Birkenstock sandals with white socks.

The MSNBC host graduated in 1990 from Castro Valley High School in (yup, you guessed it) Castro Valley, California. She looked the same as she does now except, you know, the long blonde hair and slightly bronzed skin.
As an added bonus, here’s a video clip of Maddow’s high school graduation speech. Not only does it give an early taste of her rhetorical style, but she is just so perfectly 1990s — complete with white socks and Birkenstocks.
Anderson Hays Cooper (apparently a very serious-looking Yankee fan) graduated from New York’s Dalton School in 1984. His senior yearbook quote of choice? “Mary had a little lamb, the doctor fainted.” Bah-dum-ching.
The conservative firebrand graduated in 1980 from New Canaan High School in New Canaan, Connecticut. Apparently before becoming a household name among TV pundits, Coulter was just like us… with an awkward teen phase that included turtle-neck sweaters.
The provocative HBO talk-show host and comedian graduated in 1974 from Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, New Jersey. We are not at all surprised to learn that this is how Maher looked in high school — complete with mutton chops(?!), shaggy hair, and that stoner smirk.
The soon-to-be former Today Show co-host graduated in 1974 from Ashland High School in Ashland, Oregon. Then and now, Curry is all smiles.
The Factor host graduated in 1967 from Chaminade High School on Long Island. This yearbook picture makes clear that long before O’Reilly was looking out for “the regular folks,” he was still a mighty intimidating presence.
The veteran journalist, who has reported for all of the big three broadcast networks, graduated in 1975 from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Virginia. As a high schooler, Couric was a cheerleader who interned at a news-radio station in Washington, D.C. And, gosh, her “girl next door” reputation clearly developed during those formative years — as evidenced by this yearbook photo.
As he made clear in his latest “Lean Forward” ad , the MSNBC progressive firebrand graduated in 1972 from Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a star quarterback, who eventually went to play All-American in college. We like to think he strolled around with a Varsity jacket and pressed his hand against a locker, over the shoulder of some cheerleader, as he flirted with her between classes.
The late-night comedic host graduated in 1967 from Andover High School in Andover, Massachusetts. Fun fact: his guidance counselor actually recommended he drop out of school, but he persisted on to college and beyond. Just like how eventually some NBC execs told him to cede his show to Conan O’Brien, but he persisted on…
Yes, technically speaking, Olbermann is no longer a TV personality, but he will go down in history as one of the industry’s most notorious hosts, so he’s included here. He graduated in 1975 from Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. To be honest, this yearbook picture does not look like someone who’d go on to reportedly terrorize his staff, get fired from three different networks, and block critics on Twitter like it was his day job. Oh wait…now it is.
